2015 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG® Balances Power & Efficiency

We keep hearing more and more these days about how the V8 engine is doomed to go the way of the dodo due in large part to the fact that, while awesomely powerful and fun to drive, they simply can’t be engineered to eke out enough miles per gallon to be environmentally friendly.

While there certainly are automakers that have made moves to go with turbocharged V6 engines to replace what have traditionally been less efficient V8 engines, Mercedes-Benz has taken a different tact with the completely-redesigned 2015 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG®. Engineers have figured out a way to keep all the great power numbers while also boosting up efficiency. It’s a marvel that an automaker can find a way to do both, but that’s exactly what is happening in this speedy luxury sedan.

The performance numbers are as elite as one would expect from a V8, especially a 4.0-liter V8 engine capable of producing 469 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque (or as much as 503 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque on the S trim), but what surprises some consumers is that the EPA has the C63 rated at 25 MPG on the highway, a huge boost over the outgoing model and certainly as high as this particular model has ever been.

Frankly, it’s not often that one sees a V8 engine capable of doing so much in terms of power while also managing to be so thrifty at the pump, but that’s precisely what makes this particular Mercedes-Benz vehicle so intriguing. It’s a gorgeous, luxurious sedan with the ability to drive fast, but as Mercedes-Benz continues to prove, it also is doing plenty of great things in terms of fuel economy, as well.
