Mercedes-Benz Engines Prove Smaller Can Be Better

It's really easy to work under the assumption that bigger is better because that's what we as Americans have been trained to believe. Bigger houses are better. Bigger hamburgers, bigger yachts, bigger engagement rings.

Sometimes, though, smaller can actually be better, which seems counterintuitive when it comes to something like drivetrains. After all, a V8 is, by definition, supposed to be more powerful than a V6, while a V6 should be more powerful than a four-cylinder. But thanks to advancements in turbocharging and hybrid-electric drivetrains, automotive engineers are figuring out more diverse and better ways to eke horsepower out of an engine. Both the 2015 Mercedes-AMG® C63 and 2015 Mercedes-Benz C450 AMG® Sport prove that.

Long-time Mercedes-Benz fans know that AMG® models used to be run by a massive 6.2-liter V8 engine that offered some serious grunt, but these new models are able to use smaller engines and still elicit unbelievable results. The C63 S sedan, for example, will make up to 503 horsepower from a smaller bi-turbo V8 when it releases later this fall, while the C450 AMG® Sport will use a 3.0-liter bi-turbo V6 to push out an impressive 362 hp.

The benefit of smaller engines is that they are more fuel efficient than the larger ones, which makes sense considering the push to see more efficient vehicles on American roads in the very immediate future. However, just because an engine is efficient doesn't mean it can't also be powerful, which is what we were at Hoehn Motors, Inc. believe is happening with this next batch of Mercedes-Benz engines appearing in some really nice new models later this year.
